Two provinces, one ship, one sailing each way

What does the Saint John–Digby crossing look like once summer is over? One ship, one round trip a day, and a ticket that costs less than in August. Bay Ferries Limited runs the MV Fundy Rose across the Bay of Fundy between Saint John, New Brunswick, and Digby, Nova Scotia, all year, and strongly encourages travellers to reserve ahead.

What changes in autumn is how often it goes. Through the peak season the Fundy Rose made two round trips a day, leaving Saint John at 08:00 and 14:15. From Tuesday 13 October 2026 it makes one: 09:00 from Saint John and 16:00 from Digby, every day, with a two-day pause for maintenance on 27 and 28 October. December brings back the double rotation on eight dates around the holidays.

Prices fall at the same moment. Off-peak, an adult pays $21.50 one way or $35.50 return, and a standard car (20 feet or less) adds $60.50 plus a $5 fuel surcharge. The driver is not included in the vehicle fare.

Tolls and fares

$21.50 a person, the car on top, and a $5 fuel charge

Fares drop with the schedule. The peak season ran from 18 June to 12 October 2026; from 13 October to 31 March 2027 the non-peak prices apply, and an adult return falls from $45.50 to $35.50. All amounts are Canadian dollars, and the return fare is cheaper than two singles for every age group.

A vehicle is charged on top of the passenger fares, so a driver pays the adult fare plus the vehicle fare plus the fuel surcharge: $21.50, $60.50 and $5 for one person in a standard car crossing one way. Motorhomes and vehicles towing a trailer are the exception: their per-foot rate already includes the passengers.

Map

Across the mouth of the Bay of Fundy

Saint John Harbour in New Brunswick and the Digby terminal in Nova Scotia face each other across the Bay of Fundy, so a trip on the Fundy Rose is also a change of province, though both ends keep Atlantic Time. Bay Ferries quotes about 2 h 15 min in the peak season and 2 h 30 min the rest of the year, and publishes departure times only, not arrivals.

The MV Fundy Rose has 744 seats, 250 of them airline-style, none reservable, and no cabins. There is a dedicated lounge for truck drivers, and both the ship and the terminals are smoke-free, including vapes and cannabis.

Digby Ferry Road, west side of Saint John Harbour · City of Saint John (Lower West Side)

The Saint John terminal is on the west side of the harbour, on the road named after the crossing itself, Digby Ferry Road. In the off-peak timetable this is where the day begins: the only departure leaves at 09:00, and Bay Ferries wants every vehicle and foot passenger checked in at least 60 minutes before, so plan to be in the lanes by 08:00.

Long-term parking at both terminals is paid through the HotSpot app or online, by credit card or Visa Debit only: $10 a day, $50 a week, $100 a month. Pick-up areas for foot passengers are available at both ends.

On the Nova Scotia side the ship docks at the Digby terminal on Shore Road, in Digby County. The return leaves at 16:00 on single-sailing days, which gives a day visitor from Saint John several hours ashore before the same ship sails back.

Arriving by car for the 16:00, the same one-hour check-in rule applies, and late arrivals can lose their reservation and be put on a wait list. Bay Ferries' sailing alerts by text message (send SAIL to 1-866-397-1945) are the quickest way to hear of weather cancellations.

Making the single daily Fundy Rose sailing work

One hour, not ten minutes

Check-in closes 60 minutes before departure for drivers and foot passengers. Turn up later and Bay Ferries may cancel the booking and put you on the wait list, boarding only if space remains.

Book ahead

Reservations are strongly encouraged, online or on 1-877-762-7245. You need a credit card and, for a car, the licence plate; rental cars can be booked with the word RENTAL in the plate field.

Luggage the crew will take

Suitcases, sports bags, golf clubs and medium storage totes are accepted for the luggage service. Furniture, cardboard boxes, garbage bags used as luggage and tyres or car parts are not.

Plan around 27–28 October

The ship is in maintenance for two days. If you need to cross that week, Monday 26 or Thursday 29 October are the nearest sailings, at 09:00 from Saint John.

Saint John has another, much shorter crossing inside the city limits: the free provincial Summerville ferry carries cars across the Kennebecasis River from Millidgeville to the Kingston Peninsula, every half hour.

For a longer sea crossing elsewhere in Atlantic Canada, Marine Atlantic's Port aux Basques ferry links North Sydney on Cape Breton with Newfoundland, a seven-hour trip that keeps running into December.
